Epic has 25 health systems building their own AI agents at its Agent Factory
Epic said on September 15, 2026 that 25 health systems are taking part in the second Agent Factory Build-a-Thon, where their own staff build AI agents inside Epic instead of waiting for a released feature. Epic says the first Build-a-Thon was held in May 2026, training for early adopters begins in October 2026, and broader availability is planned for 2027. Epic describes agents built to spot a serious bowel illness in newborns called necrotizing enterocolitis, flag which surgeries are likely to be cancelled, review medication refill requests, and record critical care time. Epic says the ECU Health agent saves 20 hours of staff time each week, and names Derek DeYoung as the person leading Agent Factory development.
Why it matters: Letting a health system build its own agent moves both the work and the responsibility inside the hospital. That is appealing to a system with informatics staff and a problem Epic will never build a feature for, and risky for a system without them, because somebody local now owns how the agent behaves on a bad day. The 20 hours a week is the ECU Health count for one agent, so read it as an example and not a benchmark. The open question is governance: who signs off that a home-built agent is safe to leave running, and who notices when it starts drifting.
Careers and Qualifications
What to Know Before Applying
Work areas: Clinical roles across hospitals and clinics, nursing, allied health, plus informatics, analytics, and information services roles that support its records system and AI work.
Qualification signal: For the AI and informatics side, experience inside a records system matters more than general data science. Rural and community hospital experience is genuinely relevant here, because the system runs small sites as well as an academic center.
Check current roles at ECU Health. A careers page is the source of record for openings. This profile does not claim a role is open unless the company lists it now.

Buyer Snapshot
- Best-fit buyer
- Health system leaders, informatics teams, patient access and operations leads, and clinicians comparing notes with peer organizations
- Primary use case
- Deploy healthcare AI inside a care delivery organization and report what it changed
- Typical deployment
- Care delivery organization. AI usually arrives through the records system vendor or a direct vendor contract.

- Who at the health system counted the result, and over what stretch of time?
- How many sites and how many staff were included, and was the rest of the system different?
- Did the saved work disappear, or move to another team?
Regulatory and workflow questions
- Which AI tools here touch a care decision, and which only handle paperwork?
- Who signs off that a tool is safe to leave running on live patient data?
- What is the published review process when a tool gets something wrong?
Data and contract questions
- Which patient data leave the organization to reach the vendor, and how long are they kept?
- Can the organization see and export the records the AI tool created?
- Who is told when a vendor changes the model behind a tool already in use?

No clearance is linked in this directory. That is not automatically a mark against the company. Some products support the people doing the work instead of reading a patient image or signal themselves.
